LARRY TYRRELL
Shakuhachi player Larry Tyrrell is the preeminent voice of the Japanese bamboo flute in the Northwest. He performs, teaches and records music from a repertoire encompassing traditional Japanese meditation pieces, new classical compositions and multi-ethnic music.

He recently completed a commission for a composition for shakuhachi trio that was premiered in August 2007, in Japan.

Mr. Tyrrell lived in Japan for six years where he studied with two great masters of shakuhachi; Kohachiro Miyata and Katsuya Yokoyama. He currently lives in Portland and has teaching studios both here and in Seattle.

“…melodies are haunting,
and the sound echoes
the notes’ swirling layers
and fading replies...
harmonic tensions,
ghostly warbles,
and breathy flights...
opportunities to
experience the silences
and the essence of Zen”
